2S5 Giatsint-S

The 2S5 Giatsint-S is a 152-mm self-propelled howitzer, which was designed and manufactured in 1974 by the Soviet State-run arm factories. It entered service with the Red Army in 1981 and today it is part of the Russian Ground Forces' self-propelled artillery arsenal. It was developed to replace the 2S3 Akatsiya. This powerful howitzer/gun saw combat action in the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan (1979-1989), the Chechen Wars, and, today, it is being employed as one of the main fire support artillery pieces of the Russian Ground Forces in the Russia-Ukraine War (2022). More than 900 units of this self-propelled gun has been produced, 700 of which are in active service with the Russian forces.

Technical Characteristics

The 2S5 Giatsint-S is mounted on a tracked chassis, which had been developed for the SA-4 surface-to-air missile system. It is powered by a 520 diesel engine, which provides an operational range of about 550 km. This 152mm howitzer can fire in the indirect and direct fire mode, since it has an elevation of -2° to +57°. It had a maxium range of almost 29 km and shoot conventional HE and nuclear shells.
